My Wild Camping Essential Kit List (UK)

Wild Camping or Free Camping, is where you pitch up your tent..... The exact rules regarding where you can and can't free camp differ country to country, but there are a couple of very hard rules that everyone should follow! - Leave your campsite exactly how you found it - Don't light any fires - Stay out of peoples way and don't bother anyone. Keep out of eyesight, ideally on high ground - Pick up and go early - Don't tresspass Ok so now that is out the way. I have tried

How to add a Watermark in Lightroom

Aadding a watermark to an image can really give it that personal touch! It can also be a handy way of letting viewers know where to look for more of your work. A watermark is simply and image or some text which is placed on the image when the image is exported. This acts like the photographers personal signature on the photo. Watermarks can also be used for a number of practical reasons. If you are sending a proof copy to a client you can add large watermark to prevent them f

Editing with a Wacom Tablet. My latest gadget!

A lot of photographers will spend heaps of cash on high end cameras, performance lenses, tonnes of filters and other fancey accessories. All of these will of course make a big difference in one way or another to your pictures at the capture stage, although with lenses often being in the $500+ range and filters being $100+, building your gear bag can be a serious investment. The thing is, a large amount of the look of a final finished photo comes in the editing stage. Weather

Spicing up a picture with light

I had a lovely afternoon on Sunday walking around Kings park. I took a couple of pictures of the city as everyone does, but then I turned around and noticed that the sunset through the clouds was creating some gorgeous warm colours with beams of light shining through the trees over the grass. Below is the RAW straight out of the camera image. Being a raw file it looks a little bit flat comapred with some of the more vibrant JPEG files you would get on an iphone, but we can al

Little photo editing tip for covering up overexposed skies

I was teaching a photography lesson last week and I took the picture below, and I quite like it. Problem is, I completely messed up the exposure on the sky. As you can see, it is blown out white and has no detail whatsoever, which is generally a very bad thing and doesn't look very good. I do like the rest of the composition of the image however. The thing is, when taking a picture of a person, sometimes you just don't have the time to take the time to deal with complicated e

Course Assignment 1 - Food photography and how to guide.

A little on the settings and hardware here. For lighting i'm using my mobile phone on torch mode, and a novelty wardrobe light that my girlfriend bought me, so super duper budget. On from there its a Nikonn D7100, Nikkor 35mm prime F1.8 lens at F.18, and a gorilla stand tripod. The lens is set to F.2 in order to create a shallow depth of field and blur the background of the image. And here is the image straight out of the camera in RAW format. Raw is sort of like a digital n

    Fun little photography project

So I have started anew photography course recently which a friend of mine pointed me in the direction of, and I figured it would be a good way to challenge myself into trying all sorts of different things and picking up a few new skills. Anyway, for assignment 1, I figured I would have a crack at product photography as Its something I have been interested in for a while but never really had a reason to try. Problem with doing products is that professional lighting is very ex
